The golden age of Danish painting: a French collection
12 October 2013 - 12 January 2014

As Denmark gradually lost its wars and its territories over the course of the 19th century (including Norway in 1814 and the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein in 1864), it turned in on itself, casting aside foreign models to focus on its own national art and landscape. This unprecedented era of artistic flowering was for a long time known as "the golden age of Danish painting".

Having fallen in love with the Danish school, in the space of a few years a French collector amassed more than two hundred paintings covering the entire century. This hitherto unseen ensemble reunites almost all the era’s artists alongside some of the most important names in Danish art (Abildgaard, Eckersberg, Lundbye, Melbye, Rørbye) and it is exhibited at La Piscine in honour of an exceptional season dedicated to Denmark.

This exhibition is specially sponsored by CIC Nord-Ouest and receives financial backing from the Nord-Pas de Calais Regional Authority and its partners the Aéroport de Lille, the Royal Danish Embassy and Royal Danish Consulate.

The exhibition was designed with the generous support of Flamant paints distributed by Tollens and the carpet company Balsan. Frontline services are supported by Picwic stores.
