Advice lay home filler floor

From good tools to good primer, everything must be carefully calculated for perfect textile flooring.

Turnkey carpet laying

Before jumping headlong into carpet renovation, you first need to assess your underlying floor. It needs to be dry, flat, smooth and clean.

Are there a few imperfections in your floorboards? Use some wood filler to even them out. For concrete, we recommend that you choose levelling-out products to even out the surface.

The ideal toolbox for laying carpet without any trouble should include the following items: a pencil and ruler, a painting knife, a crooked knife, a carpet trimmer, a fixing agent, a serrated trowel, a plastic trowel and a brush vacuum.

To prime or not to primeĀ ?

Priming consists in filling in the floor's imperfections before laying the carpet, for optimal results. It can be used on painted floors, concrete, plastic tiles, nailed or glued wooden floorboards, ceramic tiles and cement. Regardless, the floor must be smooth, sturdy, clean, dry and usually porous enough for the primer to stick properly.

When choosing your primer, you will have the choice between a cement-based filling product and one specially made for ceramic tiles, wood or even previously-covered floors. The filling thickness should also be considered when thinking about the criteria that will influence your decision.

Step-by-step filling for a solid base

Regarding primer preparation, please refer to the product's instructions for use and comply with them strictly (quantity, water temperature, waiting time, etc.). Then, step by step, apply the filler over the entire surface:

Step 1: Remove/protect the doors and skirting boards.
Step 2: Starting furthest away from the door, apply a coat of bonding primer (if necessary) beforehand using a roller.
Step 3: Spread the filling primer over the uneven areas, over 1 to 2 mĀ² every time. Use large, circular movements using a flat spatula to spread the product.
Step 4: Leave on to dry for 2 to 4 hours depending on how thick the layer is.

Once dry, you can start laying your carpet.
